On Monday, Universal Music Group and Instant Live announced a partnership that will pave the way for "instant bootlegs" – CDs of live concerts, mixed in real time and available as you walk out the door. Sometime next year the recordings will also be sold as downloads for MP3 players. It’s all in a story at PCWorld.com.
Have to wonder how fast “instantly available” becomes “instantly disposable.” I can only imagine the power music must have had pre-radio, pre-recording, when you might have exactly one chance to hear a particular piece of music, and then, if you were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, you’d have to rely on your memory if you ever wanted to experience that music ever again. Better? Worse? I don’t know, but less magical the new way? Definitely.
