I
have a gig bag which has a few things going for:
- It’s cheap
- Maybe that’s all it has going for
it.
I’ve
been hearing about a new line of gig bags from In Case that seem to have a lot
more going for them. (“Cheap” is not necessarily one of those things, but you
can’t have everything.)
There’s
shock-absorbing foam padding under the deflection shield, around the edges and in
a support under the neck. At the butt end of the bag there are special rubber
feet designed to “diffuse the shock of a
vertical drop away from the metal strap pin.” All this reinforcement does not mean the In Case can be checked with
baggage when you fly; it’s still a gig bag, after all, even if it’s a monster
gig bag. The bag has a gear
compartment, too, for your fake books, laptop, lunch, etc.
There’s
also an integrated, concealable backpack rig with chest strap and waist belt –
again, helpful if you’re fleeing the scene in a hurry, although I’m not
speaking from personal experience here.
PS:
Special note to John Mayer fans: He and In Case have collaborated on a gig bag
design, due out soon, called “INCSVSJM”. Not as slick a name as “The Road
Master” or “We Lug Guitars” or even “John Mayer’s Gig Bag,” but I guess he knows
what he’s doing.
