This a.m. I was listening to the 50th Anniversary Newport recordings from Columbia/Legacy. Duke Ellington definitely knows when to play and when not to play. I'd say Thelonious Monk is schooled in the same mind set.

Not enough guitar players do this. We play every note possible because, unlike horn players and those who work with horn players a lot, we don't usually think about breathing when we play.

Some of the best guitarists that I've heard are former horn players. They play with breath and sing through the instrument. Like a true jazz scat or beBop groove. It gives the listener a chance to breath as well.
