Lynette sent this note: “This
was a great show I heard on NPR last week with a luthier and how he chooses the
wood for guitars…”
The luthier is the renowned TJ Thompson,
and the story is about the sound of good wood before you turn it into a guitar.
It’s amazing how much difference you can hear among the several species of
spruce he thumps on during the show. This is the kind of attention that an
individual luthier can pay to his work; it’s hard for the people working in factories
like Martin and Gibson to get into this kind of consideration except on the
high-end instruments. It’s one of the things people take into account when
trying to decide between a factory-made guitar and a hand-made one – the consistency
available through mass production vs. the opportunity for spectacular results
when a builder focuses on the potential of a particular piece of wood.
