Here’s the list of candidates. I already have arrangements of these tunes that are from 75% to 100% done. (Not the same as 100% learned, of course.) Out of these twenty or so, I’ll pick 10 to 12. It seems right, for the moment, to sort by songwriter. Lyricists are under the radar for now.
RICHARD RODGERS: I Could Write A Book, My Romance, You Took Advantage Of Me, Blue Moon, The Blue Room, I Didn’t Know What Time It Was, You Are Too Beautiful
GEORGE GERSHWIN: Nice Work if You Can Get It, How Long Has This Been Going On?, They Can’t Take That Away From Me, Love is Here To Stay, I Got Rhythm
DUKE ELLINGTON: Come Sunday, I’m Beginning To See The Light, Do Nothing ‘Til You Hear From Me
BURTON LANE: How About You?
Jack Strachey and Harry Link: These Foolish Things
DAVE MANN: There, I Said It Again
CLIFF BURWELL: Sweet Lorraine
HOAGY CARMICHAEL: Georgia
Obviously these songs are well-worn – many are 70 or so years old and familiar to a lot of people. I can tell you, from a guitar-playing point of view, I’ve found great, great stuff in every one of them – that’s why I play them so much.
Any suggestions?
